Planting of the VBA Zuid bee park
An enthusiastic group of employees from various companies in the VBA Zuid business park (Netherlands) recently planted 5,600 flowering shrubs and other pollen-producing plants, bringing the VBA Zuid bee park to life. The addition of these plants to the 35,000 m2 of flowers and 80 mature apple trees already growing at the site means the flowering season is now even longer and more abundant, as both a food source for wild bees and a beautiful sight for humans. A wonderful biodiversity that all those working at VBA Zuid can wander through and enjoy.
Increased biodiversity at VBA Zuid
The work around the bus stops, footbridge and road exit to Royal FloraHolland in Aalsmeer is now almost complete. And with that, it’s time to re-sow the Honey Highway on the surrounding land. The businesses in and around this site have all chosen to be closely involved in this joint effort to increase VBA Zuid’s biodiversity to a level that is currently unmatched at any other business park in the Netherlands. Dozens of different Dutch flowering shrubs and other pollen-providing plants will ensure a long blooming season. The pollen and nectar from these will provide food for bees, butterflies, many different insects, birds, pheasants and hares. A biodiversity that, in turn, leads to healthy soil.
Joint effort led by Honey Highway
Honey Highway created both the design for the bee park and the planting plan to ensure the right 5,600 plants and shrubs were in the right location at the right time. Five days of hard work, together with staff from Eijkelboom, then followed to eventually result in a fantastic bee park. Employees from Dutch Flower Group, FM Group and other companies at the site also got stuck in, putting on their wellies to experience the fun and be part of something meaningful through nature education, team building and just enjoying being outdoors together.
Looking forward to summer
Deborah Post from Honey Highway said: “The goal is to see this area teeming with bees, butterflies, birds and pheasants all summer, because they’re finding the food they need to survive in the otherwise barren environment of grasslands and large logistics halls in and around Aalsmeer. Thank you to all the businesses involved!”
